Information Technology
Many use the term Information technology or IT as the way to describe what is happening in the computer and internet world. I speak to people regularly who tell me that they have a qualification in IT, they did 7 years ago and what they learned back then. The truth is in my opinion that the internet and computer have gone well beyond just information.
The PC is another extention to their lives
To call the internet as a process to retrieve information is the same as saying visiting the cinema, listening to music or watching a film on TV is also just receiving information. To an analyst this may still be true, but to the average person, the internet and their PC is another extension to their lives that bring all the entertainment a TV, Radio, MP3 player can, but also has all the shopping solutions your high street has, all the banking benefits your bank has, all the route finding solutions a map has and a million other things. The PC is no longer just about information, but about entertainment and solutions to people lives, that make their lives better than before.
Look at the internet as our customers do
To offer a better way of life to our customers by helping them improve their business sales or reduce their costs we have to look at the internet as our customers do and not as IT specialists do.
Take Myspace, not a difficult program to devise, but was what people wanted. Take YouTube, again easy technology at that time, but it was what people wanted. Even Google, simplified not complicated the areas of search. One simple box on a home page, specialising in search rather than filling the page with as many money making ideas as possible, ended up being the most profitable internet business ever, why because it gave people what they wanted and avoided the typical IT solutions at that time.
What can we offer our customers
Whenever we speak to clients it is not with an IT thought process but with a “what can we offer our or your customers” process, if our customers can’t understand it, them we assume it will not work, not matter how exciting it may be to an IT specialist.
